Red Ribbon Campaign
RED RIBBON Health Observances
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug-abuse prevention campaign that has been devoted to the well-being of children since 1985. Red Ribbon Week was started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “KiKi” Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating. Today, the Red Ribbon represents an opposition to drugs and serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The 2020 theme for Red Ribbon Week, Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free. will amplify the campaign’s mission to encourage children, families and communities to live healthy, happy and drug-free lives. It also serves as a reminder that we are all empowered with shaping the communities around us through positivity, bravery and strength. Wearing red ribbons during the month of October continues to represent our pledge to live drug free and honors the sacrifice of all who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs.
